Aliens are teeming in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem but in reality intelligent aliens haven’t contacted the earth yet and the reason is as simple as this: there is no intelligent civilization of aliens. There should be at least 36 civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy and there could be some 10,000 civilizations scattered around our galaxy but it’s not unusual for experts to suspect that civilizations which can communicate with us are scarce.
Pascal Lee, a senior planetary scientist at the SETI Institute, an organization researching the origins and prevalence of life in the universe, thinks the number of intelligent, communicating civilizations in our galaxy, which NASA estimates has some 100 to 400 billion stars (and many more planets), is around one — a Mashable report claimed.
Why is it so impossible to have an intelligent alien civilization around?
There can be microbs but it is quite challenging to find another evolved planet. A new idea published in the journal Scientific Reports — termed as compelling by scientists — claims that it is challenging for a planet to gradually evolve intelligent, communicating life. Such a world would need both oceans and continents, and the surface must be in geologic motion for at least some 500 million years.
“It can be so rare that we don’t have much of a chance to be contacted,” Taras Gerya, a geophysicist at the research university ETH Zurich in Switzerland, said.
Earth is special
The research says that Earth is special not only because it has been habitable for millions of years but also because the outer part of Earth also operated geologically for hundred of millions of years — the tectonic plates on Earth’s crust gradually moved, altering the continents and seats. This movement stoked the biological evolution, the researchers say.
All these factors happening anywhere else is probably as extreme rarity.
