Bangladesh’s spin-bowling consultant, Mushtaq Ahmed, has highlighted the positive influence of senior players Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim on the team’s morale ahead of their Test series against Pakistan, reported in ESPNCricinfo

According to Mushtaq praised the duo for their leadership, noting that their experience and positive attitude have been crucial in boosting the team’s confidence.

“All the players are excited about the first Test match,” Mushtaq stated. “Shakib and Mushfiqur are the senior players, and they are playing a positive role with the guys. I also give credit to the management for their support. The focus is now on cricket.”

The Bangladesh squad arrived in Pakistan on 13 August, following an invitation from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Political unrest in Dhaka had prevented the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from arranging a full team practice session with head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe.

The Pakistan cricket team is gearing up to host Bangladesh for a two-match Test series starting on August 21. This will mark the seventh Test series between the two teams, with Pakistan having won all six previous encounters. Despite the challenges posed by ongoing civil unrest, Bangladesh is determined to secure a victory, offering hope to its compatriots and improving its record against Pakistan. Meanwhile, Pakistan will look to extend its dominance over Bangladesh and boost its standing in the World Test Championship, where they currently sit in fifth place with 22 points from five matches.

Bangladesh’s last bilateral tour of Pakistan took place in 2020 but was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shakib joined the team in Lahore shortly after arriving on Wednesday and immediately began participating in training sessions. Shakib had recently been involved in the Global T20 Canada, playing for Bangla Tigers Mississauga.

Mushfiqur Rahim, currently playing a four-day match against Pakistan A in Islamabad, has also been active.

Bangladesh has only secured one Test series win of two or more matches abroad, which was against the West Indies in 2009. However, Mushtaq is optimistic about the team’s future, believing they have the potential to start winning more matches away from home.

“A cricketer needs to have solid basics and belief to succeed at this level,” Mushtaq remarked. “Skill takes care of itself. We will instill in them the belief that they can beat any team. Bangladesh is a strong side, and they showed their potential in the World Cup. They are developing good fast bowlers and moving in the right direction. With continued learning and self-belief, they can start winning games overseas.”

Mushtaq also commended the Bangladesh spinners, noting their eagerness to learn and their receptiveness to his guidance. He particularly praised leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, who has made significant progress under Mushtaq’s mentorship and was the joint fifth-highest wicket-taker in the recent T20 World Cup.

“The spinners are very mature and keen to learn,” Mushtaq said. “My role is to focus on tactical and technical aspects, especially during matches. You need to guide them on angles, pitch reading, pace, and field settings for specific batters. Despite their experience, reminders are essential. Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz are match-winners. They are a great group, coachable and good listeners. I am honoured to work with them, and I hope to make a difference.”
